Is Drywall Mud Waterproof? No, Why Not?

We used drywall mud for any drywall finishing project. The finishing project is also used in the bathroom and wet areas. 

So now the question Is drywall mud waterproof?

Drywall mud is generally not waterproof, but some are water-resistant. Because the joint compound is washable and it is its own feature. However, in the market, different types of good water-resistant drywall muds (joint compounds) are available, which can provide good protection from water. You can use that without any issue. 

In this article, I will explain different facts about drywall mud waterproofing. Let's jump in.

Is there any way to make drywall mud waterproof

You cannot make ordinary drywall mud truly waterproof with paint alone; wet areas need a compatible board, membrane, finish, and joint treatment designed for the exposure.

But you can use good drywall mud, which will protect pretty much from water. 

Now in the market, different good water-resistant drywall joint compounds are available, for example, easy sand 20 min. You can try it.

After mudding, use any good water-resistant drywall paint. Good mud + paint combo will give you great protection like waterproofing.

How do I water-resistant drywall mud?

For better moisture resistance, use materials specified for the wall system, control humidity, seal and finish correctly, and avoid relying on standard joint compound in direct-wet areas.

I did not recommend using paper tape for waterproofing projects. Use mash, fibreglass or any other paperless drywall tape. It not only helps to make your drywall water-resistant but also protects from mold.

Can joint compound get wet?

Joint compound can absorb moisture and soften when repeatedly wetted, especially before paint or in areas where the wall system is not designed for direct water exposure.

However, it does not easily get wet when it seals on drywall. Need a lot of water passers or stay a long time with water for the joint compound getting wet. 

So when you apply joint compound in a wet area, you need proper joint compound with the proper method.

What happens if the joint compound gets wet?

When joint compound gets wet repeatedly, it can soften, swell, lose adhesion, stain, or support mold growth depending on how long the moisture remains and how the wall is built.

If it stays with water for a long time, the compound gets hard to soft dry. And wash away with water. Day by day, it is getting thinner. This type of compound surface has a very high chance of being affected by mold.

Also, the wall colour is getting discoloured. It doesn't look very pleasant.

Is there special drywall mud for bathrooms?

Bathrooms use moisture-resistant drywall systems, cement board, waterproof membranes, or other assemblies depending on whether the surface is merely humid or directly wet.

For bathroom drywall projects, water resistance mud works best. And you need to choose any better water-resistant drywall joint compound and apply it.

Water-resistant drywall mud protects from not only water but also molds.

Best water-resistant drywall mud

Choose joint compound and wallboard for the rated wall system, but do not treat water-resistant products as substitutes for waterproofing in showers or direct-wet areas.

Always use water-resistant paint after drying mud properly.

As a water-resistant mud, Easy sand 20 does a very good job for this type of project. Mix the powder with water, then apply the area with a putty knife.

This product is also manufactured by the same brand. It gives pretty good results as water-resistant drywall mud.

You can apply it as other general drywall mud. No need for extra skill. 

After drying the compound, use paint coats on the mud area surface.

It is the best-selling pre-made compound. I did not find any critical review of this product.

Is water-resistant drywall mud protected from mold?

Moisture-resistant joint products may reduce risk in damp environments, but mold control still depends on keeping the assembly dry enough and fixing leaks or condensation.

Mold has life. It needs water, air, and food to stay alive and grow. The environment gives mold food and air. If there add the wall is damp or wet, it will grow rapidly. 

So to protect drywall from watery and stop mold growth, it requires water-resistant mud.

Is there mold resistant drywall mud?

Some compounds are marketed for moisture or mold resistance, but their performance depends on the complete wall system and they are not a substitute for proper waterproofing.

So there is no worry about it. I already suggested some joint compounds above. You can check them.

Is water-resistant drywall spackle can compare with drywall mud?

Spackle and joint compound serve different repair purposes, and neither should be assumed waterproof unless the exact product is rated for the exposure and used within an approved system.

When it comes tropic about, which is water resistance, these 2 can be water resistant. But I go with sparkles because it is thicker than joints compound. And there have added extra different material which gives good protection from water.

However, joint compounds are not very bad for this feature. You can also use joint compounds for your project without confusion.
