Glazing the Water Mixable Oil Painting: Easy Method for You

Choose a glazing medium compatible with water-mixable oils, with transparency, gloss, flow, drying, and handling matched to the effect you want from each layer.

How to add glazing medium to water mixable oil paint?

Add glazing medium gradually to transparent or semi-transparent paint, test the mixture first, and build thin layers rather than flooding the surface with excess medium.

Step 1: Mixing

Mixing glazing medium with water mixable oil paint on the paint palette. Mixing ratio 1:5 medium and paint. If you think you need more glazing, add more consistently.

Step 2: Apply

Use a soft brush and apply a thin coat on the painting. Give it 10 minutes to 2 hours to dry; if you think the upper layer is not dry yet, give it more time. Then again, apply a second coat. Do not apply each coat before drying. Otherwise, each layer will mix with the others, and you will not get proper glazing.  

How to remove the glazing 

Once a glaze has dried, removal should follow the medium and paint manufacturer's guidance, because rubbing with water may not safely lift a cured oil-paint layer.

When should you apply glazing water mixable oil paint on the painting?

Apply each glaze only after the underlying layer is dry enough to stay undisturbed, then use thin transparent color so optical depth builds without physical mixing.
