Is water mixable oil paint toxic?

Water mixable oil paint does not contain harmful pigments; the liquid oil is also safe. Most of the paint does not evaporate. But the paint is oxidized. So the paint is safe for the artist. 

But if any solvent or turpentine is added to the paint, the paint achieves toxicity. The toxic level depends on the solvent type and amount.

Water-mixable oil paint can have a mild oil or pigment odor even without traditional solvent, with intensity varying by binder, medium, brand, and studio ventilation.

To make the paint, different types of liquids are added to the pigments. The smell type and strength vary depending on the oils. Manufacturers add linseed, walnut, safflower, and more in the pigments. And the ingredient makes the paint smell different. 

Do you need ventilation for water mixable oil paint? 

Good ventilation is still recommended because pigments, mediums, cleaners, and any added solvent can affect studio air quality even when the paint itself is water-mixable.

Water mixable oil paint is safe paint. You can use the paint without an open window. But you must not use any solvent in the project.

Do water mixable oil paints have an odor?

Odor varies by paint and medium, with linseed, safflower, walnut, and other oils having different smells even though they are all used in solvent-reduced painting systems.

How long does it take for oil based paint smell to go away?

Paint odor fades at different rates depending on film thickness, room size, airflow, temperature, and any added medium, so there is no universal number of hours or days.

Typically, the smell should dissipate within a few hours of painting and be completely gone within a few days. To speed up the process, you can open windows and use fans to increase ventilation in the room.
