Painting Surface
Cement Board
Cement board is a rigid panel made from cement and reinforcing fibers or mesh. Some products are intended as tile backer, while others have a smooth face that the manufacturer permits painting.
Cement board paint compatibility
Latex paint works well on paintable cement board when the panel is properly finished and prepared. Masonry paint may also work when the product specifically approves the board and its location.
| Paint | Compatibility | Preparation | Primer or base coat | Finish | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Latex paint | Good on a board approved for painting | Confirm that the exposed face can be painted, finish joints and fasteners as directed, and make sure the surface is clean and dry. | Follow the board and paint manufacturers' requirements for sealing or priming. | Choose an interior or exterior formula suited to the location and moisture exposure. | — |
| Masonry paint | Product-specific | Verify approval for the exact cement board, then repair defects and remove dust, dirt, and loose material. | Use the primer or base coat required by the selected masonry system. | Match the coating to the location, weather, and expected moisture conditions. | — |
