Painting Surface

Wallpaper

Wallpaper may be paper, vinyl-coated, textured, or made from another specialty material. Painting over it is most practical when the wallcovering is sound and firmly bonded, with loose seams and damaged areas repaired first.

Wallpaper paint compatibility

Latex and emulsion paint can be used over suitable wallpaper, but the wallcovering should be secure and a wallpaper-compatible primer or sealer may be needed to isolate adhesive residue, stains, or absorbent paper.

Paint Compatibility Preparation Primer or ground Finish Guide
Latex paint Good on sound wallpaper with suitable preparation Make sure the wallpaper is firmly bonded, repair loose seams and edges, remove surface contamination, and let repairs dry fully. Use a wallpaper-compatible primer or sealer when needed to isolate adhesive residue, stains, absorbent paper, or problem areas. Choose a sheen appropriate for the room and avoid excessive wet application that may disturb marginally bonded paper.
Emulsion paint Good on suitable interior wallpaper after priming when required Secure loose paper, repair damaged areas, and make sure the surface is clean and dry before decorating. Use a wallcovering sealer or primer suited to the wallpaper and any exposed adhesive before applying the finish coat. Apply controlled coats and allow the system to dry fully between applications.
