Painting Surface
Faux leather is a fabric-backed synthetic surface, usually coated with polyurethane or PVC, whose finish and flexing affect how well paint stays attached.
Paint faux leather only with coatings approved for its PU or PVC surface; remove conditioners and test for peeling where the material bends or rubs.
| Paint | Compatibility | Preparation | Primer or ground | Finish | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leather paint | Good with flexible leather acrylics that explicitly support vinyl or the tested PU synthetic surface | Identify whether the coating is PU or PVC; remove dirt and conditioners with a cleaner safe for that finish, then test adhesion and tackiness. | For vinyl, follow the paint maker's scuffing and adhesion-promoter procedure; never use strong leather solvents on PU without verified approval. | Use several thin coats and an approved flexible finisher; allow full cure and test bending, rubbing, and unwanted tackiness. | — |
| Spray paint | Good on PVC/vinyl upholstery with an approved flexible vinyl spray; do not assume the same spray bonds to PU faux leather | Clean fabric-backed vinyl of oils, waxes, and conditioners, dry fully, and test a hidden spot for color change or poor bonding. | Use only the vinyl-preparation system specified by the spray maker; avoid generic hard-setting spray paint on upholstery. | Follow the product's application instructions and full cure; Rust-Oleum Vinyl Spray is rated for indoor use only. | — |
| Paint markers | Good for small, low-wear decorative motifs on artificial leather when the chosen marker supports synthetic skins | Wipe artificial leather gently with a damp sponge and dry; test ink beading, rubbing, and bleed at seams. | Usually no separate primer for small paint-marker details; do not use harsh leather degreasers by default. | Dry thoroughly, protect with a finish only if approved for both the marker and synthetic coating, and test flexing and handling. | — |
