Spray paint overview

Spray paint applies a coating as a fine aerosol. Surface compatibility depends on the specific formula and the material being painted.

Spray paint compatibility

Check the product label for the exact surfaces and preparation required by the chosen spray paint.

Surface Compatibility Preparation Primer Finish Guide
Metal Good with a compatible product Remove loose rust or coating; clean, degrease, and dry. Use when required for bare or weathered metal; some all-in-one products do not require it. Product-specific
Wood Good Use clean, dry wood; smooth rough or loose areas as needed. Useful on bare or porous wood unless the chosen product says otherwise. Product-specific
Plastic Formula-specific Clean and dry thoroughly; test adhesion when the plastic type is uncertain. Use a plastic-compatible primer or an all-surface product approved for plastic. Product-specific
PVC Good with an approved all-surface product Clean and dry thoroughly before spraying. Follow the product label; some all-surface formulas require no separate primer. Product-specific
Laminate Preparation or a suitable formula required Clean and degrease thoroughly; follow the coating instructions for adhesion preparation. Bonding primer may be needed unless the spray paint is approved for laminate without it. Product-specific
Masonry / concrete Good with a compatible product Remove dust and loose material; make sure the surface is clean and fully dry. Use a compatible primer when required by the spray paint or substrate condition. Product-specific
Wicker Good with a compatible product Remove dust and dirt and let the material dry completely; use light coats around woven areas. Depends on the underlying wicker material and chosen spray paint. Product-specific
Glass Formula-specific Clean, degrease, and dry thoroughly before painting. Use a product or primer specifically approved for glass when required. Product-specific
Plaster Good when dry Make sure the plaster is fully dry, sound, and free of dust. Helpful on porous plaster unless the chosen spray paint says otherwise. Product-specific
