Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is a chromium-containing iron alloy with a corrosion-resistant passive layer and a typically smooth, low-tooth surface for coatings.
Paint compatibility with stainless steel
Spray, epoxy, and polyurethane can work on stainless steel when the complete system suits the alloy and the surface is prepared for adhesion and exposure.

Frank Stella’s relief works combine painted stainless steel with other metals; they are constructed objects rather than flat stainless-steel panels.

Frank Stella
Stella’s Stubb’s Last Meal (1986) is a painted wall relief made with stainless steel, carbon steel, and bronze. Auction records identify the mixed-metal construction; its formed panels project from the wall, making reflective steel part of the composition.
