Steel

Steel is a strong ferrous metal that can corrode when moisture and oxygen reach an unprotected surface. Ordinary carbon or mild steel needs different preparation from galvanized or stainless steel, which have their own surface guides.

Steel paint compatibility

Steel coating performance depends heavily on surface preparation. Remove rust, mill scale, oil, grease, and failing coating, then use the primer and surface profile specified by the complete coating system.

Enamel paint Excellent with a steel-compatible enamel system Remove rust, mill scale, loose coating, oil, and grease, then dry and prepare the surface as the coating requires. Use the specified corrosion-control or bonding primer unless the enamel is approved for direct-to-metal application. Choose a finish rated for the expected weather, moisture, abrasion, and handling.
Spray paint Excellent with a steel-approved aerosol coating Remove loose rust and coating, clean and degrease thoroughly, and dry before spraying. Prime bare steel when required; some all-in-one metal aerosols combine primer and topcoat. Apply within the stated recoat window and allow full cure before service.
Alkyd paint Excellent with a compatible metal system Remove corrosion and loose coating, clean and degrease, and dull glossy existing finishes where required. Use a rust-inhibiting primer on bare steel unless direct application is explicitly approved. Select the topcoat for interior or exterior exposure and expected wear.
Epoxy paint Excellent with a steel-specific epoxy coating system Remove corrosion, mill scale, oil, grease, and incompatible coatings and create the profile required by the epoxy specification. Use the complete epoxy primer-and-topcoat system specified for the steel and service environment. Observe recoat windows and full-cure requirements before chemical, moisture, or abrasion exposure.
High-heat paint Excellent when rated for the steel and actual operating temperature Remove rust, scale, grease, oil, and incompatible coating according to the high-temperature system instructions. Product-specific; use only the primer approved for the selected high-heat coating. Follow the specified drying and heat-curing schedule before full-temperature service.
Intumescent paint Excellent for structural steel as part of an approved tested fire-protection system Prepare the steel to the cleanliness and surface-profile requirements of the tested system. Use only the primer approved for the intumescent system. Apply the required dry-film thickness and compatible topcoat, when specified, to achieve the designed fire-resistance performance.
Acrylic paint Good with a steel-compatible acrylic system Remove rust and contamination and create suitable tooth before applying the coating system. Use a compatible corrosion-control or bonding primer unless the acrylic product is designed for direct-to-metal use. Use a product rated for the location, weather, moisture, and handling.
