Rubber

Rubber is a flexible elastomer used in tires, seals, footwear, mats, grips, and many molded parts. Its flexibility and plasticizers can make durable paint adhesion difficult.

Rubber paint compatibility

Purpose-made rubber coatings and paint markers are usually more reliable than ordinary paint, while flexible or high-wear rubber needs especially careful product selection and testing.

Paint marker Good for markings when the marker specifically approves rubber Remove dirt, oil, and moisture and test the marker first, especially on soft or highly flexible rubber. Usually unnecessary for a rubber-approved marker. Allow the marking to dry fully and expect wear to vary with flexing and abrasion.
Acrylic paint Limited and product-specific Clean thoroughly and remove only the factory finish or contamination that the selected paint system instructs you to remove. Use a compatible adhesion additive when the exact acrylic system approves rubber. Best for low-wear or decorative areas; ordinary acrylic paint may eventually peel from flexible rubber.
Spray paint Generally not recommended unless the exact product approves rubber Check the product label before sanding, priming, or spraying because rubber types and solvent sensitivity vary. No general-purpose primer makes ordinary spray paint suitable for all rubber. Use only a rubber-compatible system that can tolerate the item's flexing, handling, and exposure.
