Glass paint compatibility

Glass is smooth and nonporous, so cleaning and adhesion preparation matter more than they do on many absorbent surfaces.

Paint Compatibility Preparation Primer or medium Curing or finish Guide
Acrylic paint Preparation required Degrease thoroughly; smooth glass needs extra adhesion preparation. Use a glass-compatible adhesion medium or suitable primer when needed. Use a glass-compatible system for handled or washed items.
Spray paint Good with a glass-compatible product Clean and dry thoroughly; lightly abrade only when the product instructions call for it. Use a compatible primer when required; primer will make clear glass opaque. Product-specific.
Enamel paint Good with a glass-specific enamel Clean and degrease thoroughly before painting. Usually no separate primer when the product is designed for glass; follow the label. Follow the exact curing or baking instructions; washability is product-specific.
