Suitable projects

Graco positions the X5 for occasional home painting, especially larger interior and exterior areas where airless spraying can justify setup and masking.

  • Interior walls and ceilings: Broad areas of prepared drywall can be practical to spray when the coating is approved for airless application.
  • Exterior siding: Larger wall areas can benefit from spraying, provided the coating suits the siding material, weather exposure, and X5 tip limits.
  • Fences, decks, and railings: Repeated boards and broad sections are potential projects; check the coating and preparation needs of wood or other substrates, and see the fence guide.
  • Garages, sheds, and outbuildings: Painting walls and exterior surfaces can suit the X5 when access, masking, and the chosen coating make spraying worthwhile.
  • Doors and larger panels: Broad door and panel surfaces can be sprayed with suitable coatings and careful masking; detailed fine-finish work may need another approach.

Common painting surfaces

These surfaces are common in home painting projects, but the coating must suit the material and stay within the X5’s spray-tip and pressure limits.

Drywall

Drywall is a gypsum-core building panel faced with paper, with joint compound at seams and repairs creating areas of different absorbency for paint.

Wood

Wood is a natural, porous material whose grain, absorbency, knots, resin, species, and existing finish all influence paint preparation and adhesion.

Metal

Metal surfaces are hard and nonporous but vary by material, with steel prone to rust and aluminum forming an oxide layer that changes paint adhesion.

Plaster

Plaster is a mineral wall finish made from gypsum, lime, cement, or similar binders, with porosity and moisture content changing as the material cures and dries.

Brick

Brick is a porous fired-clay masonry material with a textured surface that absorbs moisture and paint while allowing vapor to move through the wall.

Concrete

Concrete is a porous building material made from cement, water, and aggregate that hardens through curing and can continue moving moisture through its surface.

Vinyl

Vinyl is a synthetic plastic used in rigid and flexible products, with additives, surface finish, and thermal movement all affecting coating adhesion.
