Paint Type

Bituminous Paint

Bituminous paint is a black, water-resistant coating made with bitumen or asphaltic binders and used for protective applications on metal, masonry, concrete, and timber.

Bituminous paint surface compatibility

Bituminous paint is used mainly for waterproofing and corrosion protection, with substrate approval, sunlight, immersion, and topcoating limits set by the product.

Surface Compatibility Preparation Primer or ground Finish Guide
Metal Excellent for approved exterior metalwork and corrosion-protection uses Remove loose rust, scale, grease, oil, dirt, and failing coating before application. Use the rust treatment or primer required by the selected system, especially where corrosion is advanced. Black protective film with water and weather resistance; gloss commonly dulls with weathering and ultraviolet exposure.
Concrete Good to excellent on sound concrete and cementitious structures when the product approves porous mineral surfaces Use sound, clean, dry concrete and remove dust, laitance, contamination, and loose material. Porous concrete may require a dedicated bitumen primer before the protective coats. Water-resistant black barrier coating rather than a breathable decorative masonry finish.
Wood Good for approved exterior timber, felt-backed work, and utility protection where appearance is secondary Use dry, sound timber and remove dirt, loose coating, oil, and other contamination. Primer requirements vary by porosity and product; use only the preparation specified by the bituminous system. Black protective film that can reduce water exposure but is not a substitute for structural moisture control.
Brick Good on sound brick and masonry where a bituminous waterproof barrier is appropriate Correct active water problems, remove dust and loose material, and let the substrate reach the moisture condition required by the product. Porous masonry may require a compatible bitumen primer. Opaque black barrier finish with different vapor and weathering behavior from ordinary masonry paint.
