Painting Surface

Asphalt

Asphalt is a bitumen-bound paving material used for roads, driveways, and parking lots, where traffic wear and surface oils call for specialty coatings.

Paint compatibility with asphalt

Use approved traffic coatings for asphalt markings, and choose pedestrian finishes rated for movement, weather, wear, and traction on paved surfaces.

Paint Compatibility Preparation Primer or ground Finish Guide
Acrylic traffic paint Excellent for lines and parking-lot markings when explicitly approved for asphalt Remove debris, oil, and moisture; let new asphalt or sealcoat cure as the manufacturer specifies. Often direct-to-pavement; use a primer only if the traffic-paint system requires it. Apply the specified film thickness and respect weather limits, reflectivity requirements, and dry-to-traffic time. —
Alkyd traffic paint Excellent for asphalt marking with an approved fast-drying solvent-borne road-marking formula Clean, dry, and remove loose pavement materials; verify that the paint permits application over prior markings or sealers. Product-specific; many marking formulations are direct-to-prepared asphalt. Follow the product's solvent safety precautions, weather window, cure time, and reopening instructions. —
Anti-slip paint Good with a textured coating designed for asphalt walkways, ramps, or recreation areas Repair damaged pavement, remove oils and debris, and establish a clean dry surface. Use the asphalt-compatible primer or textured system specified by the coating supplier. Maintain specified grit, wear resistance, and pedestrian slip resistance; not a substitute for road-marking specifications. —
Specialty colored pavement coating Good for larger colored areas when approved for asphalt and the actual pedestrian, bicycle, or vehicle load Repair cracks, address loose aggregate or oil, and assess previous sealers and traffic exposure. Use the approved binder, primer, or aggregate system, including the manufacturer's application thickness. Specify suitable traction, UV resistance, traffic wear, and return-to-service time. —
