Silicone

Silicone is a flexible, low-surface-energy elastomer used in molds, seals, phone cases, prosthetics, and soft molded parts. Ordinary paint usually adheres poorly unless the coating is specifically designed for silicone.

Silicone paint compatibility

Purpose-made silicone paint systems are the reliable starting point, while ordinary acrylic or aerosol coatings should not be assumed to bond to flexible silicone.

Silicone paint system Best when the coating explicitly matches the silicone chemistry Remove mold release, oil, dust, and other contamination exactly as the coating manufacturer specifies. Product-specific; use the complete silicone-compatible system. A matched silicone coating can remain flexible instead of cracking as the substrate bends.
Acrylic paint Generally poor unless incorporated into a silicone-approved system Do not rely on sanding alone to overcome silicone's low surface energy. No universal primer makes ordinary acrylic paint reliable on all silicone. Rigid acrylic films can peel or crack when the silicone flexes.
Paint markers Limited and formula-specific Clean the area and test the exact marker on an inconspicuous spot first. Usually none unless the marker manufacturer specifies an adhesion system. Expect handling and flexing to expose weak adhesion quickly.
Spray paint Generally not recommended unless the aerosol system explicitly approves silicone Check solvent compatibility and test before applying anything to a visible area. Product-specific. Ordinary aerosol coatings often form a film that does not move or bond with silicone.
