Linoleum

Linoleum is resilient flooring made from linseed oil, wood flour, and mineral fillers on a backing, unlike synthetic PVC-based vinyl flooring.

Paint compatibility with linoleum

Linoleum floors require a coating system that specifically approves linoleum, with cleaning, existing factory finishes, and traffic wear affecting adhesion.

Paint Compatibility Preparation Primer or ground Finish Guide
Floor paint system Excellent when an interior floor-coating system explicitly lists linoleum and its existing finish Verify true linoleum rather than vinyl, clean and degrease, and remove incompatible wax or loose coatings as directed; do not strip sound factory finish by default. Follow the full product system: Rust-Oleum HOME is a base coat plus required topcoat and specifies no sanding or primer after proper cleaning. Use its mandatory protective topcoat at the stated recoat interval; respect full cure, traffic restrictions, and slip requirements. —
Acrylic paint Poor as ordinary artist or wall acrylic on walked-on linoleum; only a manufacturer-approved floor formulation is suitable For a floor, identify any old floor polish, protective finish, or moisture problem before using a tested floor system. An artist-acrylic primer does not make a regular acrylic paint into durable floor paint. Ordinary acrylic may wear or peel rapidly under furniture and foot traffic; use a compatible protective flooring system instead. —
Spray paint Poor for floors; consider only on nontraffic decorative linoleum offcuts with a spray explicitly approved for that piece Clean a nonfloor sample and test for adhesion, surface damage, and discoloration; never assume it suits an installed floor. Use any surface primer required by the product; standard aerosol primer is not a substitute for an approved floor system. For display-only objects, let the coating fully cure; avoid foot traffic, damp areas, and surfaces requiring slip resistance. —
