Painting Surface

OSB

Oriented strand board, or OSB, is an engineered wood panel made from rectangular wood strands bonded in cross-oriented layers. Its textured face and exposed edges can absorb coating unevenly, so sealing and primer choice strongly affect the finish.

OSB paint compatibility

Acrylic and latex coatings can work on OSB when the panel is dry, stable, and properly sealed or primed for the intended exposure.

Paint Compatibility Preparation Primer or ground Finish Guide
Latex paint Good with preparation and a compatible primer Keep the panel dry, remove contamination and loose fibers, and address exposed edges before painting. Prime raw OSB with a product approved for composite wood and the intended interior or exterior exposure. Use a durable architectural coating matched to the location.
Acrylic paint Good with a composite-wood-compatible system Use dry, sound OSB; remove dust and loose strands and smooth only the areas that need it without damaging the panel. Use a sealing or stain-blocking primer suited to composite wood, especially on raw faces and cut edges. Choose an interior or exterior product approved for the location and expected moisture exposure.
