Painting Surface

Particleboard

Particleboard is an engineered wood panel made from wood particles bonded with resin under heat and pressure. Raw board is porous and moisture-sensitive, while many furniture panels are covered with laminate, veneer, or another decorative surface.

Particleboard paint compatibility

Acrylic and latex paint can work on particleboard after proper sealing and priming. Laminated or coated particleboard should be treated as the finish material rather than as raw board.

Paint Compatibility Preparation Primer or ground Finish Guide
Latex paint Good for suitable interior projects after priming Clean and dry the board, smooth rough areas, and lightly abrade coated surfaces only when the surface treatment allows it. Use a compatible sealing or bonding primer; raw edges usually need extra sealing. Use a durable interior sheen where the surface will be cleaned or handled.
Acrylic paint Good on properly prepared interior particleboard Keep the board dry, sand as appropriate, remove dust, and avoid saturating raw faces or edges with water. Seal and prime raw particleboard before applying a water-based acrylic topcoat. Choose a furniture-grade finish for handled surfaces; protect edges from moisture.
