Painting Surface

Polyethylene

Polyethylene (PE) is a common plastic used in containers, furniture, and films, with low surface energy that makes HDPE and LDPE particularly hard to paint.

Paint compatibility with polyethylene

Untreated HDPE and LDPE resist many paints and primers, so check resin-specific approval and test a complete polyethylene adhesion system before painting.

Paint Compatibility Preparation Primer or ground Finish Guide
Spray paint Conditional: only with explicit polyethylene approval Identify HDPE or LDPE, clean mold residue and grease, and test a concealed area. Use a primer or adhesion promoter specifically approved for the exact PE material when required. Apply light coats and allow the full cure before handling. —
Acrylic paint Unreliable on untreated PE; conditional with a validated PE adhesion system Clean and test surface wetting; light sanding alone usually will not solve adhesion. Use a polyethylene-approved pretreatment and primer that is compatible with the acrylic. A clear coat cannot rescue a poorly bonded basecoat; test for scratching and flexing. —
Enamel paint Generally unsuitable unless an approved PE coating system specifies it Check the item's flexibility and solvent sensitivity before selecting a formulation. Use only a complete supplier-approved PE primer and topcoat combination. Rigid films can crack on flexible LDPE; durability and cure are product-specific. —
Polyurethane paint Conditional for PE components with a manufacturer-validated flexible urethane system Check whether the item is rigid HDPE or flexible LDPE; remove molding residues and other contamination. Use a coating-specific PE adhesion promoter and compatible urethane primer or sealer, not an ordinary adhesive-only primer. Follow the full cure; test peeling, scuffing, and flexing before returning an item to use. —
