Painting Surface
Wood veneer is a thin layer of real wood bonded over plywood, MDF, particleboard, or another core. Because the visible wood layer is thin, aggressive sanding can cut through it and expose the material underneath.
Latex, enamel, chalk, and acrylic paint can work on sound veneer, but cleaning and gentle preparation are important because the thin wood face can be damaged by heavy sanding.
| Paint | Compatibility | Preparation | Primer or ground | Finish | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Enamel paint | Excellent for cabinets, furniture, and trim when properly primed | Remove grease and residue, repair loose veneer first, and lightly prepare glossy finishes without exposing the core. | Use a compatible bonding or stain-blocking primer as needed. | Allow the enamel to cure fully before heavy handling or cleaning. | — |
| Latex paint | Good for wall paneling and suitable furniture with preparation | Clean and degrease thoroughly; dull a glossy finish gently without sanding through the veneer. | Use a bonding primer on glossy or difficult-to-adhere veneer; use stain-blocking primer when the wood or existing finish requires it. | Choose an interior or exterior formula suited to the item and expected wear. | — |
| Chalk paint | Good for interior furniture and décor | Clean thoroughly and repair lifting or damaged veneer before painting. | Often product-specific; use a suitable primer if the finish is very glossy or stains bleed through. | Use the recommended wax or protective topcoat for handled pieces. | — |
| Acrylic paint | Good for decorative projects with preparation | Use sound, clean, dry veneer and lightly prepare sealed or glossy areas without sanding through the face. | Use a compatible primer or ground when the surface is sealed, glossy, or unevenly absorbent. | Protect handled or exposed decorative work with a compatible finish when needed. | — |
