Window Frames
Window frames combine weather exposure, moving parts, glazing edges, and several common materials, so paint selection starts with identifying the frame itself.
Painting surfaces
Window frames may be wood, aluminum, vinyl, PVC, or fiberglass, and each material needs different cleaning, priming, and adhesion preparation.
| Surface | Typical area | Preparation | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | Sashes, frames, trim, and older window assemblies | Repair damaged wood, remove loose coating, sand as needed, and prime bare or stain-prone areas. | Moisture, movement, exterior weather, and preserving operable joints |
| Aluminum | Metal frames and tracks | Degrease thoroughly, remove oxidation or loose coating, and use preparation and primer intended for aluminum. | Oxidation, adhesion, weather exposure, and avoiding tracks or seals |
| Vinyl | Vinyl window frames and exterior cladding | Clean carefully and use only coatings specifically approved for the vinyl product. | Heat buildup, color restrictions, expansion, and manufacturer warranty |
| PVC | Rigid plastic frame components and trim | Remove dirt and processing residue and follow the exact coating system's adhesion preparation. | Plastic additives, thermal movement, and product-specific compatibility |
| Fiberglass | Composite frames and exterior components | Clean thoroughly, prepare the resin or factory finish as directed, and use a compatible primer-sealer when required. | Factory finish, weather exposure, adhesion, and composite protection |
Paint types
Window-frame paint should match both the substrate and exposure, with acrylic, enamel, spray, or other exterior-rated systems used where compatible.
| Paint type | Typical use | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Acrylic paint | Compatible wood, fiberglass, and approved exterior frame systems | Use a formulation and primer matched to the actual frame material and exposure. |
| Enamel paint | Prepared metal or wood frames where the system approves the substrate | Allow full curing and keep paint out of tracks, seals, hardware, and drainage paths. |
| Spray paint | Compatible metal or plastic components when the aerosol formula explicitly approves them | Mask glazing and adjacent surfaces carefully and verify solvent compatibility first. |
