Paint Type
Metallic Paint
Metallic paint contains reflective particles that create a metal-like shimmer or sheen. Products range from decorative water-based wall paints to specialty coatings and aerosols, so surface preparation and durability depend on the exact formula.
Metallic paint compatibility
Metallic coatings can work on many properly prepared surfaces, but smoothness and base color strongly affect the final appearance. Use the primer and application method specified for the selected metallic system to reduce uneven sheen or poor adhesion.
| Surface | Compatibility | Preparation | Primer or ground | Finish | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Drywall | Excellent with an architectural metallic paint system | Repair defects, sand smooth, remove dust, and create an even base before the metallic finish. | Use the metallic-paint manufacturer's recommended primer or foundation color. | Apply consistently because roller or brush pattern can affect the reflective appearance. | — |
| Plaster | Good when fully cured, smooth, and properly primed | Let new plaster cure and dry fully; repair defects and remove dust or loose material. | Use the specified metallic-paint primer to create a uniform base. | Apply in the recommended direction and method to keep the metallic sheen even. | — |
| Wood | Good with a metallic coating approved for wood | Clean, dry, sand as needed, and remove dust, grease, wax, or loose existing finish. | Prime bare or uneven wood with the foundation system specified for the metallic paint. | Use a compatible clear topcoat when additional handling or weather protection is required. | — |
| Metal | Good with a metallic coating system approved for the metal | Remove rust or oxidation, clean, degrease, dry, and dull glossy areas when required. | Use a compatible bonding or corrosion-control primer before the decorative metallic finish when directed. | Protect with the system's compatible clear finish when exposure or handling requires it. | — |
